FAQ

Prepare & Stay Safe

Landslides are a serious threat. Being prepared is crucial to ensure your safety and the safety of your loved ones when faced with such a disaster. Educating yourself on the necessary steps for landslide preparedness can make all the difference in an emergency.

Being prepared means more than just knowing the risks; it involves having a plan, staying informed, and recognizing early warning signs such as changes in terrain or unusual water flows. It also means knowing what to do during a landslide, including how to evacuate safely and where to seek shelter.

Remember, preparedness is not just about responding to an emergency—it's about preventing one. Stay alert, stay informed, and stay safe.

Preparing for a Landslide Emergency

Before a Landslide
  • Develop an evacuation plan
You should know where to go if you have to leave your home. Consider the opening of alternative access roads to avoid getting cut off from supplies and medical care.
  • Learn about emergency response and discuss with your family members.
  • Prepare a grab bag
    Personal grab bag
    • Non-perishable food
    • Drinking water
    • Identification
    • Soap & personal hygiene items
    • A change of clothes
    • Personal medication
    • Cell phone and charger
    Family grab bag
    • Water for cooking & bathing (8L/person)
    • First aid kit
    • Torchlight (with extra batteries)
    • Whistles to signal for help
    • Wrench or pliers to turn off facilities
    • Items for unique family needs (elderly, children, disabled)
    • Books, games to keep kids occupied at shelters
  • Watch for changes in how rainwater flows on slopes near your home
Watch the hillsides around your home for any signs of land movement, such as small landslips, or ponding of water on slope surfaces. Noticing small changes could alert you to an increased threat of landslides.
During a Landslide
  • Inform affected neighbours
Your neighbours may not be aware that a landslide is about to happen or is happening. Inform them quickly, and help those who may need assistance to evacuate.
  • Leave
Getting out of the path of a landslide is your best protection. If it is at all possible, run across the path of the landslide rather than away from it on its path. If you are trapped inside your house, go upstairs rather than staying on the ground floor. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the ground floor gets destroyed first as the house is swept away in the watery run-off of a landslide.
  • Roll yourself into a ball under a strong object
If you are actually in a landslide, go under a strong object in a fontal position.
After a Landslide
  • Stay away from the slide area
There may be the danger of additional slides. Listen carefully for cracking sounds from trees or debris falling down the scar surface of the slope.
  • Check for injured and trapped persons near the slide
Direct rescuers to their location. But remember that the window of the time for survival i generally estimated at two hours.
  • Watch for flooding
Floods sometimes follow landslides and debris flows. Make sure that you don't stand near live broken electricity cables in pools of water.
  • Listen to local stations on a portable or television for the latest emergency information
  • Look for and report broken utility lines to the appropriate authorities
Reporting potential hazards will get the utilities turned off as quickly as possible, preventing further hazard and injury.
  • Help people who require specific assistance
Infants, elderly people, those without transportation, people with disabilities and large families who may need additional help in an emergency situation. Take them to a relief or operations centre where they can be cared for.
