It was a life-changing and traumatic tragedy that has left deep and lasting scars. Many still grapple with the psychological trauma of that night. Survivors had no words to describe the terrifying sound that woke them from their sleep. Some campers lived to recount the panic of being trapped underneath and the narrow escape.

One third of the 92 campers, however, did not live to tell the tale. It was unimaginable horror as families of the deceased were called to the mortuary. The grief that followed was tormenting and intense, as many still struggle to comprehend how a joyful retreat could have ended up a heartbreaking disaster.
